Coordinated by the Library of Congress (LOC) through its American Folklife Center, the Veterans History Project calls for Americans to play a personal role in preserving the nation’s history by collecting first-hand accounts of those who defended the United States during wartime. The Robert R. Coles History Room is collecting personal remembrances of Glen Cove veterans of World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnamese, and Persian Gulf Wars as well as civilians who served in support of the veterans. History Room staff will collect, preserve, and provide access to the audio and video recorded oral histories. They will also send a copy of each interview to the Library of Congress for inclusion in their archives and national database. The collection includes letters, photographs, maps, and other informative materials.

To participate in the project, please call (516) 676-2130, or send an email to longislandhistory@glencovellibrary.org.

Interviews

The personal accounts of participating veterans contain a wide range of topics, including biographical information, military training, wartime/ peacetime service experiences, post-service life, and reflections upon the impact of serving in the U.S. military. Although many of our veterans have fought in the same wars, no two stories are the same.
